How to do a Network benchmark test

Estimated time to read: 2 minutes

We will explain how you can test and compare the performance of our instance flavors. We will use an Ubuntu VM and test the Networking. You can repeat these tests on any similar platform and compare the results.

Network

Testing our network speed is more difficult. We have redundant network links which are shared amongst the instances. Our links are fast, the uplinks are fast and we again monitor its performance. We're usually limited by the performance of the path to the remote location on the internet or the remote service itself. We're connected to several very fast transit providers to make sure you get the best performance we can offer you but still are not in control of the internet.

Ookla's speed test (https://www.speedtest.net/) is an online test platform. They have test servers in a lot of locations. The test tries to find a test server not too far away and runs the test. The test is mainly focused on consumer broadband connections which are usually a lot slower than the performance you get in our instances. Results may vary with the remote server, uplinks between the two test points, etc etc.

Most of our flavors have an average network limit. In the case of the S3.medium, it's around 317680 KB/sec or 320MB/sec. These limits can be found in our portal, for example when you launch an instance.

Installation

sudo apt update && sudo apt install speedtest-cli

Running

sudo speedtest-cli

Result

The results are shown in Megabits. one Megabit per second is 0,125 MB per second. The results show a download rate of 1722.62 Mbits/s, or around 215 MB/sec an upload rate of 1263.59 Mbits/s or almost 158 MB/s.
